Shipping a Container to Nosara, Costa Rica: What It Costs to Move Your Stuff in 2026

What it costs to ship household goods to Nosara in 2026, port choice, duties now that Law 9996 has expired, and the last mile problem buyers miss.

September 21, 202612 min read

You just closed on a house near Playa Guiones and now you are staring at a garage full of furniture in Denver or Toronto wondering whether any of it is worth moving. Shipping a container to Nosara, Costa Rica is one of the least discussed and most expensive decisions a new owner makes, and in 2026 the math changed in a way most buyers have not caught up with yet. The duty free import exemption that made this easy for the last five years expired on July 14, 2026. If you are shipping now, you are shipping into the old rules, and the old rules are expensive.

馃摝 A 20 foot container from a US port to Costa Rica runs several thousand dollars all in before duties (see the breakdown below), and without a residency exemption you can add 30% to 40% of declared value in duties and VAT on top of the freight.

This guide covers what a container to Nosara actually costs in 2026, which port to use, how the menaje de casa process works, the last mile problem that catches Nosara buyers specifically, and the honest answer to whether you should ship at all.

What Changed on July 14, 2026

Law 9996, formally the Ley para la Atracci贸n de Inversionistas, Rentistas y Pensionados, was passed in July 2021 as a post pandemic recovery measure. It gave approved investors, rentistas, and pensionados a package of benefits that mattered enormously to anyone relocating with belongings:

  • One time duty free import of household goods for the beneficiary and dependents
  • Duty free import of up to two vehicles
  • A 20% reduction in the property transfer tax
  • A lowered investor residency threshold of $150,000 instead of $200,000

Those tax incentives expired on July 14, 2026. Applications filed before July 15, 2026 and approved under the right category still carry the benefits. Everyone applying after that date does not.

There is no current indication that the Legislative Assembly will extend or replace the incentives. The law was written as a temporary measure and it sunset on schedule. There is also live ambiguity about whether the investor threshold reverted cleanly to $200,000 or whether a good faith argument for $150,000 survives, which is a question for your attorney, not a blog post. See our investor residency guide for where that stands.

馃挕 Key insight: If you filed residency before July 15, 2026 and it gets approved, your container can still come in tax free, once, within six months of approval. Do not ship before approval or you forfeit the exemption entirely. If you filed after that date, budget for full duties.

What a Container to Nosara Actually Costs

Published numbers vary widely because quotes bundle different things. Ocean freight alone is the smallest line on the invoice. Here is the realistic range for a door to door move from a US or Canadian origin to a house in the Nosara area.

Cost component 20 ft container 40 ft container Notes
Ocean freight (port to port) $1,200 to $3,000 $1,700 to $5,000 Caldera runs higher than Lim贸n
Origin packing and loading $1,500 to $4,000 $2,500 to $6,000 Optional if you load yourself
Customs brokerage and clearance $600 to $1,500 $600 to $1,500 Flat-ish, not by size
Port handling and warehouse fees $300 to $900 $400 to $1,200 Inspection fees land here
Inland trucking to Nosara $400 to $1,200 $600 to $1,800 Depends on port and road access
Unload crew in Nosara $200 to $500 $300 to $700 Local labor, cash
Realistic all in total $4,200 to $8,000 $6,100 to $12,000 Before any duties

Then add duties if you have no exemption. Costa Rica assesses on CIF value, meaning the declared value of the goods plus insurance plus freight, not just what you think your used sofa is worth.

Category Typical duty on CIF VAT (IVA) Effective combined
Furniture and d茅cor ~14% 13% ~29%
Appliances ~14% 13% ~29%
Audio and electronics ~14% 13% ~29%
Some categories up to 30%+ 13% 35% to 45%

On a $25,000 declared load of furniture and appliances, that is roughly $7,000 to $9,000 in tax on top of $6,000 in freight. A $31,000 to $34,000 bill to move used furniture across a continent.

馃挕 Key insight: The break even question is not "what did this cost me" but "what would replacing it cost in Costa Rica." Only items where replacement cost in country exceeds roughly 1.5x their share of the shipping and duty bill are worth putting in the box.

Which Port: Caldera or Lim贸n

This is a genuine decision for Nosara buyers and most generic Costa Rica guides get it wrong by defaulting to Lim贸n.

Puerto Lim贸n / Mo铆n (Caribbean) Puerto Caldera (Pacific)
Share of container imports ~80% of national volume Much smaller
Shipping line options Most Fewer
Customs brokers available Most Fewer
Typical clearance speed Faster, more infrastructure Slower, thinner capacity
Freight cost Lower Higher
Distance to Nosara ~400 km, long haul across country ~200 km, far shorter
Physical inspection Standard Around 60% of household shipments inspected, 3 to 5 business days

The trade off is clean. Lim贸n is cheaper and faster to clear, but the trucking leg is roughly double. Caldera costs more on the water and can sit longer in customs, but it is on the correct side of the country for Playa Guiones, Playa Pelada, and Garza.

For a 20 foot container, the freight savings at Lim贸n usually beat the extra trucking. For a 40 foot container going to a hard to reach lot, Caldera often wins because the shorter overland run means less handling risk and fewer hours on Route 21 and Route 160.

Watch demurrage either way. A container sitting at port accrues roughly $50 to $150 per day. That is the line item that turns a manageable move into a painful one, and it is almost always caused by paperwork, not by the shipping line.

The Menaje de Casa Process

Costa Rica allows import of new and used household goods under the menaje de casa modality. The goods must be for personal or family use and reasonable in quantity for a household. Commercial quantities of anything, including twelve identical chairs for a rental, invite scrutiny.

Documents your broker will require:

  • Passport copy for the importer
  • Original Bill of Lading, rated, or the Air Waybill for air freight
  • Detailed packing list in English or Spanish
  • Full inventory with brand, model, and serial numbers where applicable
  • Residency documentation if claiming an exemption
  • Proof of the address the goods are going to

The inventory is where moves go wrong. Customs wants specificity. "Box 14: kitchen items" is an invitation to a full inspection and a delay. Itemize. Photograph. Number every box and have the numbering match the manifest exactly.

Plan on roughly 10 business days of clearance from arrival, longer at Caldera, longer again if anything on the paperwork does not match what is in the box.

馃挕 Key insight: Customs delays in Costa Rica are almost never about the goods. They are about inventory mismatches. An hour of careful itemizing at origin saves a week of demurrage at destination.

The Nosara Last Mile Nobody Warns You About

Here is the part that is specific to Nosara and absent from every generic Costa Rica shipping guide.

Route 160, the road that connects Nosara toward Garza and beyond, has been a decades long paving saga. Sections were asphalted starting in 2020 after years of delay, and the project has moved in fits and starts since. Conditions vary by segment and by season, and a road that is fine in February can be a different proposition in October. Our guide to getting to Nosara covers the current state of access in more detail.

What that means for a 40 foot container:

  • Many Nosara lots cannot take a full size container truck. Steep driveways, narrow jungle lanes, low hanging branches, and soft shoulders in green season all stop a tractor trailer cold.
  • Transloading is common. The container clears port, moves to a staging yard, and the contents transfer to smaller trucks for the final run. Budget for it. It is labor, and labor is billed by the day.
  • Green season compounds everything. May through November, unpaved access roads to properties above Pelada or inland toward Santa Marta can become genuinely impassable for heavy vehicles. See our guide on owning property during rainy season.
  • Nobody is coming to fix a stuck truck quickly. Recovery equipment is not local.

Before you book anything, have someone stand at your property and answer one question honestly: can a full size truck physically turn around here, and can it do so in the rain. If the answer is no, tell your broker before the container ships, not after.

馃挕 Key insight: Confirm truck access to your specific lot before you book the container. The cost of a transload arranged in advance is a few hundred dollars. The cost of one arranged at the last minute with a container accruing demurrage is several thousand.

What to Ship and What to Buy in Costa Rica

The coastal climate is brutal on the wrong materials. Salt air, humidity in the eighties, and sustained heat destroy things that lasted decades in a dry climate. This is not a preference list, it is a survival list.

Ship it Buy it locally Leave it behind
Quality tools and hardware Mattresses and bedding Upholstered fabric sofas
Specialty kitchen equipment Basic furniture Particle board anything
Surfboards and sporting gear Outdoor and rattan furniture Large appliances (warranty and voltage)
Books and personal effects Plastics, housewares, linens Anything with untreated ferrous metal
High value art (with insurance) Appliances with local warranty Wool rugs and heavy textiles
Teak and solid hardwood pieces Patio and pool furniture Seasonal clothing you will never wear

Costa Rica runs on 120V/60Hz like the US and Canada, so small appliances work. Large appliances are a different calculation: local warranty and service matter far more than the purchase price when a compressor fails four hours from the nearest service center. PriceSmart and the big box retailers now have a real Guanacaste presence, and their prices on appliances are closer to North American than most buyers expect once you add duty to an imported one.

If you are outfitting a rental rather than a home, our room by room furnishing budget is the more relevant document. Rental guests do not care that your dining table crossed an ocean.

Realistic Timeline

Stage Duration Running total
Quote, book, and schedule pickup 2 to 4 weeks Week 4
Pack, load, inventory, and depart 1 to 2 weeks Week 6
Ocean transit 2 to 4 weeks Week 10
Customs clearance 10 business days, longer at Caldera Week 12
Inland transport and delivery 3 to 7 days Week 13

Three months door to door is a good plan. Four is a realistic one. Do not schedule your move-in around the container. Rent furnished, or buy a bed locally on day one and let the container arrive when it arrives.

Five Mistakes That Cost Real Money

  1. Shipping before residency approval. If you are chasing an exemption, the goods must arrive after approval, within the six month window. Shipping early forfeits it.
  2. Under-declaring value. Customs valuers in Costa Rica are experienced. A declared value that is obviously low triggers full inspection and a reassessment, and you pay duty on their number, not yours.
  3. Using an origin agent with no Costa Rica counterpart. The move is won or lost at destination. Hire the broker first, then let the broker recommend the freight forwarder.
  4. Ignoring the access question. Covered above. It is the single most common Nosara specific failure.
  5. Shipping a car on reflex. Vehicle import duties in Costa Rica are severe, often approaching or exceeding the value of the vehicle, and without the Law 9996 exemption there is rarely a case for it. Buy locally.

Should You Ship at All?

For most Nosara buyers in 2026, the honest answer is a partial shipment or none.

Ship a full container if: you are relocating permanently, you have a residency application filed before July 15, 2026 that is likely to be approved, you own genuinely valuable and climate appropriate furniture, and your property has confirmed truck access.

Ship a partial container or consolidated LCL if: you have twenty or thirty boxes of tools, gear, kitchen equipment, and personal effects worth moving but no furniture that belongs in the tropics.

Ship nothing if: this is a second home or a rental, your budget for furnishing it is under roughly $40,000, or the property is primarily an investment. Buy in country, get local warranties, and skip the entire customs exercise. Our post-closing checklist walks through the sequence that actually matters in your first ninety days of ownership.

If you are bringing animals, the timeline and paperwork run on a completely separate track from your goods. Start with moving to Nosara with pets well before you book anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still get the duty free household goods exemption? Only if your residency application under the investor, rentista, or pensionado category was filed before July 15, 2026 and is approved. The benefits expired for new applicants on July 14, 2026.

Is it cheaper to ship to Lim贸n or Caldera for Nosara? Lim贸n is usually cheaper on freight and faster to clear but roughly doubles the trucking distance. Caldera is closer to Nosara but costs more on the water and clears more slowly. For most 20 foot loads Lim贸n still wins on total cost.

How much are duties without an exemption? Budget 30% to 40% of CIF value. Most household categories land near 14% duty plus 13% VAT, but some categories are considerably higher.

Can a 40 foot container reach my property? Often no. Verify physical access before booking and plan for a transload to smaller trucks if there is any doubt.

How long does the whole process take? Plan on three to four months from first quote to goods in the house.

Where This Fits in the Buying Process

Shipping is a post-closing problem, but it is a pre-closing decision. The buyers who handle it well are the ones who decided during due diligence whether they were shipping or furnishing locally, and then built the access question into their property evaluation. A hillside lot with a spectacular view and a driveway no truck can climb is a different property than it looks like on the listing.

Start with the buyer's guide if you are still early, and browse current Nosara listings with the access question in mind. When you tour, take a photo of the driveway entrance from the road. Your future self, standing next to a container that cannot turn around, will thank you.

Costs, duty rates, and customs procedures in Costa Rica change. Verify current rates with a licensed Costa Rican customs broker and confirm residency benefit eligibility with an immigration attorney before making shipping decisions.
